Sand Moving Project
Jockey’s Ridge State Park is moving 140,000 cubic yards of sand — about 200,000 tons — from the southeast section of the park near the access from Soundside Road. The sand will be moved back to where it came from, to the northwest corner of the park near the main access on Carolista Drive.
The dunes are known to move about 6 feet every year but with last year’s active hurricane season they moved much faster than anticipated and are encroaching Soundside Road and nearby homes and other structures.
During this work, dump trucks will be traveling on Soundside Road and Highway 58 in order to transport the sand. The Soundside Beach access will likely be closed periodically as 3,000 cubic yards of sand will be used for beach nourishment.
The work is expected to take 120 days and began Jan. 2. Most of the work will be conducted between 8 and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Residents, visitors, and media are asked to contact the park office at 252-441-7132 or jockeys.ridge@ncparks.gov with questions or concerns.
Contractors Hatchell, Inc. are performing the work. John Delucia with Albemarle and Associates is the project engineer. This project is a capital improvement project. Funding comes from the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund.
